 Evolution of Ipapo Town

In the 1600s A.D., a courageous hunter named OLUGBAGBIN embarked on a journey during the reign of Alaafin Sango, Oyo Ile's ruler. This expedition led to the birth of Ipapo, a town named under the sheltering branches of the APAPO tree. AJIBILU AKANGBE ERIN, Sanda's son and Alaafin Sango's grandson, later sought refuge in Ipapo amidst Oyo-Ile's conflict. Drawn by its allure and his kinship with Olugbagbin, he vowed to bring his family, sparking Ipapo's evolution.

Despite search efforts, Alaafin Sango couldn't find AJIBILU AKANGBE ERIN. Chiefs Teetu, Agoro, and Jagun were sent but couldn't sway AJIBILU AKANGBE ERIN to return. The chiefs chose to stay, revering their heritage. Eight emissaries followed, embracing Ipapo as their destiny.
Amidst growth, Ejigbojo, Sanda's wife, with friends Obaloge and Iyamode, tried to persuade Ajibilu to return, but in vain. He invoked incantations and vanished into the soil. Ejigbojo and her friends replicated this. Four shrines were born, honoring destiny and sacrifice. Alaafin still sends a tribute, keeping the legend alive.
Ipapo's tale, of courage, unity, and sacrifice, honors the past and shapes a future defined by its journey.

Facts You Need to know about the fastest growing Ipapo town

Historical Background

In the 1600s AD, a courageous hunter embarked on hunting expeditions that spanned from Oyo-ile to the rich and blessed land where Ipapo is now situated. Known as OLUGBAGBIN, he undertook challenging tasks that eventually compelled him to seek much-needed rest under the shelter of the lone tree known as IGI APAPO. After a prolonged period, IPAPO was finally obtained. Olugbagbin founded his settlement, which became closely associated with the hunting community.

Ipapo's development commenced when numerous hunters discovered the fertile agricultural reserves within its open fields. Over time, AJIBILU AKANGBE ERIN, a close friend of Olugbagbin, encountered a disagreement with his grandfather, Alaafin Sango, who was also the father of SANDA. As a result, AJIBILU moved to Ipapo-ile and, leveraging his influence, urged his relatives, wife, and children to join him. This marked a turning point in Ipapo's progress.

Years passed without AJIBILU returning to Oyo-Ile, which raised concerns for Alaafin Sango. He dispatched a committee of three men – Chief Agoro, Teetu, and Jagun – to search for AJIBILU. However, their attempts to bring him back were unsuccessful. Consequently, the committee faced a dilemma in how to convey this situation. In light of this predicament, the three chiefs decided to remain in Ipapo rather than returning to Oyo-ile. This decision perplexed Alaafin Sango, prompting him to assemble another committee comprising eight members to search for both Ajibilu and the three chiefs. This second committee, too, found themselves staying in Ipapo when Ajibilu displayed no intention of reversing his decision.

The situation saddened Ejigbojo, SANDA's wife, who, along with her friends Obaloge and Iyamode, made concerted efforts to convince Ajibilu to reconsider. Despite their persistent efforts, Ajibilu, Omo SANDA, remained resolute in his determination to stay in Ipapo-ile. He performed a symbolic action involving a long chain, numerous charms, and a continuous run, culminating in the earth seemingly swallowing him alive as he stepped on the chain. This perplexing act led Ejigbojo, Iyamode, and Obaloge to be overcome by unconsciousness, resulting in a strange phenomenon where they were each swallowed by the earth at different locations within Ipapo ile.

These four significant events have become integral aspects of Ipapo's local worship practices.
